Jess Stone isn't someone who particularly enjoys being the centre of attention. Yet she's the one who decided that she and her husband, Greg, should ride motorcycles around the world with their dog, putting themselves and their small business squarely in the public eye. And the story of what prompted that decision is rather amusing.
What began as an ambitious 18-month motorcycle adventure has now stretched into four years, taking them from the Arctic Ocean to the southern tip of South America. Along the way, they've faced difficult roads, complicated border crossings, unexpected dangers, and the challenge of running a business while constantly on the move. Their company, RUFFLY, makes artisan dog gear and the K9 Moto Cockpit, which allows their dog, Whimsy, to travel on the back of Jess's motorcycle.
Jess is remarkably determined, despite admitting that off-road riding still makes her anxious. Greg brings a different perspective, along with a good sense of humour, to the challenges they encounter. Together, they've developed a way of travelling that leaves room for both the demands of everyday life and the unexpected experiences that come with motorcycle adventure.
And somewhere along the way, they've discovered something they weren't necessarily looking for: what they call moments of home, those fleeting times when they feel completely at home in places they've never been before.
Jess and Greg share stories from the road, the realities of travelling by motorcycle with a dog, the thinking behind their new book, My Heart Is Home with You, and their plans to take the journey across Africa.
