Motorcycling From Alaska to Ushuaia Via Mountain Peaks - James Barkman

Growing up, James Barkman had a friend who always talked about riding from Alaska to Ushuaia. When he got the call that his friend's dream was about to become a reality, James was excited to join him on the trip. However, James suggested an even more adventurous twist to the plan: he and his two friends would combine the motorcycle trip with mountain climbing. This meant that they had to pack for both activities, which was a unique challenge. They had to include everything they would need for motorcycling as well as everything they’d need for high-altitude climbing. This trip was not for the faint of heart, as they dealt with unpredictable weather conditions and had to camp for extended periods of time. The adventure was peppered with moments of excitement, tension, and even a close encounter with death.

Riding a Dirt Ribbon North to Alaska - Jeff Davison

Deadhorse, Alaska is an unincorporated community that supports oil operations in nearby Prudhoe Bay and is the temporary home for two to three thousand nonpermanent workers. To get to Deadhorse you have to ride the Dalton Highway, commonly referred to as the Haul Road, and it’s not for the faint of heart. Road conditions vary greatly with gravel, mud, dust, snow and ice. Why has it become a destination for motorcyclists, not to mention loads of other tourists? So why all the fuss? On this episode, Jeff Davison tells us what it was like for him to ride a test motorcycle from Suzuki all the way to Deadhorse Alaska.

Mud, Sweat and Tears - Not Everyone Makes it Through - Wayne Mitchell

What is it about the Darien Gap that draws people to it? Is it the bot flies, the venomous snakes, the bandits, the extremely rough terrain? There are options for getting around it, by boat or plane and you won’t risk your motorcycle or your life by choosing an alternate route, yet still there are those who are fascinated by the Darien Gap, those who want to conquer it. In 2017, Wayne Mitchell and a group of ex-military friends rode from snowy Alaska to the furthest point in Argentina, but when they reached the Gap, they didn’t go around it, they went through it. After just one day of pushing the limits in the jungle, one of their team was forced to turn back to Panama. What was supposed to have been the dry season in the Darien Gap proved to be a monumental challenge with torrential rains, deep mud and broken down motorcycles.

How the Pandemic Saved an Alaskan Adventure - Donovan Lucibello

Donovan Lucibello hadn’t ridden a motorcycle in years, but when he discovered dual sport riding he decided that he wanted to ride from Montana to Alaska. Having a short window he rode one way and decided to leave his motorcycle in Anchorage with a plan to return the next year. But as it is with life, other things got in the way and then he started a new job. When he was laid off in June of last year he was crushed, but the very next day he made the decision to return to Alaska and finish his trip. And although the country was in the midst of a historic pandemic, he found that he was made to feel welcome by the hospitality, perseverance and generosity of the people he met. For Donovan, the trip to Alaska was ‘motorcycle therapy’ that helped to set him right again.
