Mexico Motorcycle Travel: What Riders Need to Know

Mexico is one of the easiest international adventures for riders from the U.S. and Canada—close enough to reach without a major expedition, yet different enough to feel like true travel. From Baja desert tracks to mountain twisties, high country, and coastal roads, the riding is as varied as the culture, food, and landscapes. Spencer Conway has spent the past several years living in Mexico and riding more than 66,000 kilometres through 24 states. Speaking from his home in Oaxaca, he shares what makes Mexico such a compelling destination for motorcycle travel, why he stayed, what many riders miss about traveling there, and why the country offers far more depth and variety than most riders realize.

Spencer Conway is an adventure motorcyclist, writer, and television presenter known for documenting long-distance journeys around the world. He first gained wider attention after riding solo around Africa, a trip that became the television series African Motorcycle Diaries and later the book The Japanese-Speaking Curtain Maker. Since then, Spencer has continued exploring by motorcycle across multiple continents, focusing on the people, cultures, and unexpected experiences that come from travelling slowly and off the beaten path. In recent years, he has been living and riding extensively in Mexico with his partner, Cathy, exploring much of the country by motorcycle while sharing his experiences and insights with other riders.
