German motorcycle adventurers, Bea Höbenreich and Helmut Koch, share their incredible long-distance journey on 50cc vintage Kreidler Florett motorcycles, proving that you don’t need big adventure bikes to tackle serious overland travel. After completing a five-and-a-half-year round-the-world trip (2011–2016) on Honda Transalps, the German engineers returned home briefly before setting off again—this time determined to reject the “bigger, newer, more gear” mindset and embrace minimalist motorcycle adventure. Rebuilding and modifying their 50-year-old two-stroke bikes for remote riding (12V conversion, electronic ignition, custom racks, gearing changes, and more), they rode through Australia’s outback, tackled Cape York’s infamous Old Telegraph Track, navigated brutal creek crossings like Palm Creek, and managed breakdowns, bike drownings, and deep sand—all on low-powered machines that became instant conversation starters. They discuss vintage bike preparation, lightweight ADV travel, outback riding challenges, and shipping the bikes from Perth to Malaysia as they continue their Time to Ride Adventures through Southeast Asia.
