Spencer Conway has what many motorcyclists would say is the best job in the world. He films his motorcycle adventures for TV and he gets paid for it. He and his girlfriend ride two up, and while he’s riding hard, she’s filming. And to do this, they’re on the road for nine months out of the year: filming, riding, suffering and exploring - what some might call… true adventure.
But is Spencer lucky? Did he stumble into a job that really anyone can do if given the same opportunity? Or does it take a certain kind of person, personality or approach to life? On this episode Spencer talks about how serendipity in his life has brought him success, adventure and happiness - but between his words, what he says and what he doesn’t say - points to something we all understand in life - it’s not what happens to you - it’s how you choose to react.

The Japanese-Speaking Curtain Maker
Imagine sharing your camp with four Bedouin tribesmen who show up unexpected or having Kenyan bandits shoot at you or having to hide from Al Qaeda terrorists. That’s probably not something you expect to happen to you on any given day, but those things did happen to Spencer Conway.
About a decade ago, on a rainy and windy morning late in the year, Spencer was seen off by family and friends from the small village of Biddenden in South East England as he headed out on a ten month journey around Africa. Riding out on his Yamaha XT660, the plan was to circumnavigate Africa solo, while raising money for Save the Children UK. Part of his adventure was filmed, which culminated in the TV series African Motorcycle Diaries and most recently Spencer has documented his journey in a book, The Japanese-Speaking Curtain Maker.
