Jim Hyde, founder of RawHyde Adventures, talks about the essential tools and skills every motorcycle adventurer needs for remote riding. And John Bestfather, a wilderness guide and paramedic from the Yukon in Canada, talks about what should be in your 24 hour emergency kit.

Jim Hyde - RawHyde Adventures

Jim Hyde started RawHyde Adventures in the spring of 2002, running an eight day dual sport adventure tour through the Mojave Desert. In 2004 RawHyde started offering an “Adventure Camp” training program. In 2005 they started offering Adventure Rallies and an Adventure Expedition in the Baja Peninsula and Copper Canyon. Soon after, in 2007 RawHyde brought in their training programs and the next year were official endorsed by BMW Motorrad North America and became an official BMW training centre, one of only nine in the world.

RawHyde Adventures has trained thousands of riders, runs tours all over the world, as well as hosts events for adventure riders.

An avid outdoorsmen who enjoys rock and ice climbing, paddling, skiing, cycling, and all round adventuring. In 2011, he and a friend cycled across Canada- 7600km in 75 days. He is often training and preparing for expeditions - this May he and 2 others will be attempting to summit Mount Logan, Canada’s highest peak. He lives in Whitehorse, Yukon and currently works as a Critical Care Flight Paramedic. John travels around Canada teaching wilderness medicine, is an aspiring documentary filmmaker, writer, and photographer. John has also worked as an outdoor guide in paddling, climbing, and dogsledding in Canada and overseas. He also volunteers on a specialized medical search and rescue team that responds to backcountry emergencies in the Yukon Territory.

The 24 Hour Emergency Kit - John Bestfather

This can all be packed into a small package that easily fits into any pack and is great for ADV riding. It can be of course, more comprehensive, but part of the point of this kit is to keep it small and simple so that it fits anywhere, all the time.

Training - First Aid, wilderness
Food
Shelter
Signalling - whistle, pen flare
Water Purification
Knife
Lighter / matches / flint and striker
Fire-starter
Light - Small headlamp that uses watch batteries is tiny and easy to pack 
Flagging tape
First Aid
Pain Meds - Tylenol and Ibuprofen is a good combination
Dehydration tablets
Sugar snack - candy - honey
Communications - depends on where you are going and what is available - Telling a responsible person where you are going and what your plans are is one of the basic and most important things you can do.
