RAW LISTENER QUESTIONS: Have a question for the RAW panel? Send it to us here.
What if you wanted to do a world trip but not all at once, ride for a few months then return home for a few months? What are some of the things that you would need to consider when it comes to storage and leaving your motorcycle behind? And what kind of bike would be best for different types of travel you might be doing while on that trip?
LISTENER QUESTIONS
Dan Fortin: I am a few years (5 years) from retiring and am planning an RTW trip as a retirement gift to myself. The concept is to do it in section, 4 or 5 months at a time over a 5 years period. Simply said, summers back home are too much fun for me to skip. I wonder about the logistics involved in storing my bike at different locations around the world. I know about Carnets and about Temporary Imported Vehicle, but how can one store one's mount for a bunch of months whilst one is enjoying retirement for a few months back home? Also, which bike is best? I will be honest to have a preference for a VStrom 1050 because my first bike was a Vee, but looking at all that is available on the market I truly am at a loss for which mount to choose for this adventure. Being a young retiree (58 years old at the beginning of my planned RTW) I do not think I will actively chase occasions to visit the most secluded regions of our small planet. I truly think that my trip will be 70% on official roads versus actually crossing a desert in feet of sands. So I guess I am trying to see which bike is best for which kind of rider.
